Wodehouse (adapted from a play by Ferenc Molnár), a fizzy romantic farce that had all the characters in formal evening dress throughout. Louise raised money to rent the Bainbridge High School auditorium for three weeks in March ’94. The cast included Dave Allen, Steve Buechler, Bob Zinn, Michele McCrackin, Bob McAllister, Steve Stolee, Bob Cederwall, and Miles Yanick, with costumes by Mary Braden and Marilyn Boynton, set design by Will Langemack, assistant direction by Kate Carruthers, stage management by Steve Nicolet, lighting by Jane Jay, and publicity by Cynthia Sears. At the end of a successful run, producer Louise proudly hosted the cast and crew for dinner at the then new Karsten’s Restaurant in Suquamish. Finishing the meal with toasts, Louise addressed the group, “Well, our show made money\[cheer\] and I want to ask you all what you think I should do with it: I could give you all a share of it, which would be about $50 apiece; or … \[dramatic pause\] … we could start a new theatre company!” The decision was unanimous and Island Theatre was born and named at a subsequent meeting in the fall of 1994 at Dave and Julie Allen’s house. The first board members were: Mary Braden, Steve Buechler, Kate Carruthers, Michele McCrackin, Louise Mills, Steve Nicolet; and Cynthia Sears, with Steve Stolee serving as its first president. The new theatre company’s goal was to produce adultoriented plays rather than musicals or children’s productions, which were already well-covered by other local theatres. **Island Theatre became a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation** in 1995 and produced its first play, Blythe Spirit by Noel Coward, directed by Ron Milton, that fall at the BHS Auditorium. Crimes of the Heart by Beth Henley followed in March 1995, directed by Michele McCrackin. In July and August of 1995, IT staged two outdoor productions: Love Letters by A.R. Gurney and a musical revue, Love Songs, directed by Ron Milton.In 1994, 1995 and 1997, IT sponsored the Seattle Symphony Family Concerts on Bainbridge after the former host organization gave up the opportunity. June 1996 saw the production of The Nerd by Larry Shue, directed by Kate Carruthers and performed at Bainbridge Performing Arts, followed by Love Letters by A.R. Gurney presented on the deck at the Bloedel Reserve in August. **In 1996 and 97, IT produced two live radio shows** titled: “On the Air: From the Golden Age of Radio” under the direction of Frank Buxton, from his own collection of authentic radio scripts. They were performed in what was then the Bainbridge Commons (now Bainbridge Island Senior Community Center). The second radio show also had a performance in Port Townsend. During those same early years, IT also produced several readings in private homes. IT’s big break, so to speak, came with its collaboration, in 1998, with the Bainbridge Public Library to present a regular season of bi-monthly staged play readings at the library, a project that supported the missions of both organizations. Those productions continue today, along with “potluck” play readings (Island Theatre at Your House, or YoHo) in private homes. IT also participates periodically in the Kitsap Regional Library’s One Book, One Community program by performing a staged play reading, tied to that year’s book selection, at Kitsap County library branches. **Through it all,** IT has operated with an all-volunteer board, a minimal budget, and without its own theater, giving rise to its motto, “Can we rehearse at YOUR house?” In 2012, IT launched the Island Theatre Ten-Minute Play Festival, the brainchild of then IT board member Sara Scribner, to showcase plays by established and emerging playwrights from throughout Kitsap County. Now in its fifth year, the TMPF typically draws over 50 entries, with the top plays, as selected by a panel of theatre professionals, performed over a weekend in August to packed houses at Bainbridge Performing Arts. With some exceptions, Island Theatre productions are free to the community, with donations gratefully accepted. If you’d like to submit a play for our 2022 Festival, you may do so at any time. Winners will be announced in April 2022.* Island Theatre invites Kitsap County playwrights – both established and aspiring – to submit original plays, no more than ten minutes in length, to Island Theatre’s Annual Ten-Minute Play Festival. Winning plays will be announced in April. A program of the eight to ten plays selected will be performed at Bainbridge Performing Arts during Festival Weekend in August on a Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening and a Saturday matinee. All performances will be offered to the public free, or pay-as-you-choose. This contest is open to all playwrights, high school age and older, who are past or present residents of Kitsap County or have a strong Kitsap County connection. Play submissions will be judged on literary/theatrical merit and originality, as well as for creative use of the theme. **ENTRIES**. Submit up to three separate entries; however, only one entry per playwright will be selected for the final program. LENGTH. Plays should be no longer than 10 minutes; longer submissions will not be considered. (If you are uncertain about its length, please read the play aloud before submitting. He and his partner of twenty three years, Osa Bogren, were about to begin a sightseeing road trip down to San Diego, to spend time with his daughter & granddaughters, before moving to Portugal when the restrictions of the Pandemic lifted. When a trip to the doctor for a nagging pain in his right hamstring revealed a rare soft tissue sarcoma that had already metastasized to his lungs, they rented an apartment near Seattle Cancer Care Alliance in Seattle and he began aggressive chemotherapy. He was overcome by the cancer and bravely faced his death at 3:50 pm, on March 1st. Tell Carroll Schreiber III, was born August 2nd, 1941 in St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York City to Pamela Dutton Prime and Tell Carroll Schreiber II. Tell was the third of six children and was beloved by each of his siblings. When Tell was 9, his family moved to Bucks County, Pennsylvania where he attended Central Bucks High School, and he was both a star football player and wrestler, and valedictorian of his graduating class. In 1959 he attended Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. In 1961 he took a leave of absence from Dartmouth and enlisted in the US Army, where he had the opportunity to enroll at the Monterey Language Institute. There he studied Russian, and subsequently served as an interpreter at a U.S. base in Germany, specializing in Russian submarine communications. Following his years in the military, he returned to Dartmouth, where he developed his love of acting and majored in Drama. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1966. Later, in 1987, Tell enrolled at York University in Toronto and earned a Master’s Degree in acting and directing. Tell will be remembered as a celebrated actor, director, woodworker, and supporter of the arts in his adopted home of Bainbridge Island, WA where he has lived with his partner, Osa, for the last 23 years in a house designed by Jeb Thornburg that they lovingly built on his Taylor Avenue property in Eagledale, and where he fashioned cabinets, furniture and art as Astragal Design from his professional woodshop. Tell’s is a familiar face on the stage at Bainbridge Performing Arts, as well as Island Theatre in its various productions from staged readings to fully staged touring shows. He twice played an iconic attorney litigating a high-profile case— once as the famous prosecuting lawyer modeled after William Jennings Bryan in Inherit the Wind, and later as the defense attorney in the stage adaptation of Local author David Guterson’s novel Snow Falling on Cedars. He also directed shows for Island Theatre and served several years on its board of directors. Tell is survived by his partner Osa Bogren, his son Liev Schreiber, his daughter Meara Demko, son Pablo Schreiber, his three living sisters, and the many step-children and grandchildren whose lives he enriched with his love and attention. Island Theatre presents Park Bench Stories, a Film in 5 Scenes, by five local playwrights. This 40-minute film will air continuously on YouTube and at IslandTheatre.org from June 16th through June 30th.   A group of 5 local playwrights and screenwriters had been meeting together for a year when Covid struck, shutting performance venues for the foreseeable future. Challenged to keep motivated, one member suggested they each write a variation on a theme using a single park bench as their only prop and location. By limiting each play to 2 or 3 characters, they would be able to film their plays outdoors, socially distanced, while working inside a theatre was not possible. The result: five linked stories that take place on a single day, as this simple bench becomes a locus for lost love, human connection, humor, sadness, and enlightenment for the diverse characters who meet there. “What started out as five writers just trying to stay creative and sane has blossomed into much more than what any of one of us could have imagined on our own.” The five plays and writers are Jason Erickson (Congratulations on Your New Bench), Joseph Steck (IRL Sal), Maria Beatty (Dog Gone It), Kit Laws (So Close), and Jeffrey M. Brown (Rob and Bob). Video and production was done by Jason Erickson and Joseph Steck. The park bench was lovingly crafted by Jim Laws. The play is recommended for high school age and up. In the fall we offer a **TEN-MINUTE PLAYWRITING WORKSHOP** – a hands-on class that gives you a jumpstart on writing a play for next year’s Festival. **Join our mailing list to learn about our next Island Theatre event!** **Calling all actors!** Island Theatre will be holding auditions for the 2025 Ten-Minute Play Festival on May 3rd and 4th, 2025. Auditions will be held both days from 10:00 am to noon at The Grange, 10340 Madison Ave NE on Bainbridge Island. Advanced registration is required. Approximately 30 actors will be chosen ranging in age from high school to senior citizen. Actors will be cast in one of ten ten-minute plays, including dramas, comedies and everything in between. Auditioning actors will read from sides. No prepared monologues are necessary. Actors must be available for rehearsals from May through early August. (Rehearsal schedules will be determined by each play’s cast and director to allow for flexibility.) Actors must also be available during Festival production week, August 17th to the 23rd. Festival performances will take place August 21st, 22nd and 23rd at the Buxton Center for the Arts at Bainbridge Performing Arts. The Ten-Minute Play Festival is Island Theatre’s annual celebration of Kitsap County playwrights, actors and directors. It features ten ten-minute plays, selected by a panel of theatre professionals from approximately 65 submissions. The chosen plays are produced in four fully-staged performances. Show times are 7:30 p.m. both nights. Admission is by donation with a suggested $5 minimum donation. Augusta is a comedy with a dark edge. Molly and Claire clean houses for wealthy summer people on the coast of Maine but their world is rocked by the appearance of Jimmy, their new boss who is alternately abusive and seductive. The three find themselves in a relationship filled with twists, turns, betrayals, power grabs, moral dilemmas, and, ultimately, a startling crime which provides an unexpected ray of hope. Richard Dresser’s seventeen published plays have been produced in New York, regional theater, and Europe. Augusta is the first of a trilogy of plays about happiness and class in America. Augusta is directed by Steve Stolee and features Islanders Sabrina Fiander, Cathy Richards-Ingram and Dustin Ingram. It is recommended for high school age and up. Island Theatre is excited to finally be bringing "Island Theatre at the Library" back to the Library after a long Covid hiatus. After that class, participants asked us to bring her back for more. So now, with the pandemic behind us, we’re doing just that. This two-session, 8-hour course is for new and seasoned playwrights alike. Students will learn and experiment with the core fundamentals of playwriting while focusing on the ten-minute play format. You’ll discuss and debate what makes a “good” ten-minute play. And through a series of timed exercises and group games, you’ll create characters, write dialogue, and share your work out loud in a fast-paced, inclusive, safe, and fun environment. Class size is limited to 15 so that each student receives personal attention. This course is perfect for anyone who wants to submit a play for Island Theatre’s 2024 Ten-Minute Play Festival, learn the fundamentals of playwriting, or brush up your playwriting skills. She has led playwriting courses for adult learners at ACT Theatre, Seattle Repertory Theater, and Macha Monkey Productions and has taught hundreds of beginning to advanced playwriting students. Kristina is the author of several critically acclaimed plays including With Dignity, Thebes and Franklin and Figaro. Her play Nancy, Frank, and Joe, co-written with Desiree Prewitt, was nominated for the Steinberg/ATCA New Play Award in 2010. Kristina’s plays have been produced in Seattle, Denver, Albuquerque, and across Canada in numerous fringe theatre festivals. She is the co-founder and former Artistic Director of Macha Monkey Productions, now called Macha Theatre Works. This year’s plays were selected from over 70 submissions and run the gamut from the real to the surreal, comedy to drama. There’s something for everyone – and a new play every ten minutes! Here’s the line-up: **“Third Time’s a Charm” by Audrey Nelson & William Galvin** **William Galvin** (he/him) (co-author with Audrey Nelson) is a Bainbridge High School graduate and a rising senior at the University of Washington. He is majoring in computer science and applied math. This is his first published play, and he maintains that Audrey did most of the work. In his free time, William likes struggling with crosswords, cooking, and playing tennis. **Barbara Hume** is an emerging playwright with over thirty years’ experience in theatre as an actor, choreographer and director. Her play “Light Through the Cellar Door” focuses on women’s reproductive choice and will be featured in the “Perspective Series” at BIMA on August 29, 2024. Her play “Red Line” examines the impact of segregation during the 1940s and was featured in Theatre 33’s “Pop Up” 2024 Summer Season this past June in Salem, Oregon. Her ten-minute play “On the House” takes a humorous look at the complications and snafus of digital dating. **Gina King** moved to Bainbridge Island just in time to graduate as a Spartan, then spent a few post-college decades working with all manner of critters from spotted owls to butterflies as a wildlife biologist for the Yakama Nation. She's happy to be back home, protecting land with the BI Land Trust, exploring the PNW with husband Alex, and occasionally dabbling in writing. She's honored to have a play selected for the Festival, and excited it's the same year her daughter Ellie will be directing her first 10-minute play. **Lee Lawing**. Since 2018, I have had a renewed passion for writing and telling stories. I participated in the 2018 William Inge Playwright’s Festival with my one-act play “Crashing Through Kauai.” Being a playwright who doesn’t like to talk about myself or my work all that much, I feel I’ve done pretty well. I’ve had my plays performed all over the world as well as being published in journals and anthologies. I am truly thankful that I am still writing and telling stories and always honored by being selected when the stars align. **Paul Lewis** is a playwright and composer whose work includes “The Names” (Theatre 33), “Lost in the Hills, A Musical” (Theatre 33); musical adaptations of two iconic children’s books, “The Runaway Bunny” and “Caps for Sale,” both of which premiered at Boston Children’s Theatre; “The Crossing, A Musical” (Theater Schmeater and Jewel Box); “Jill Trent Science Sleuth” (Cayuga College); “Oblivion” (Driftwood); and “The Hours of Life, A Musical” (Theatre22). His musical adaptation of the best-selling novel Wish won the 2023 AATE Distinguished Play Award. **Aleks Merilo** is an award-winning playwright. His script, “The Snowmaker” was winner of the Playwrights First Award, The Chameleon Theatre Circle New Play contest, Playhouse on The Square’s New Works @ The Works Festival, and was a finalist for the Oregon Play Prize. His play “The Widow of Tom’s Hill” played Off-Broadway at 59E59, where Broadway World called it “A truly distinctive piece of theater.” His play “Exit 27” was called “The best original play to be produced this season” by the Houston Chronicle; was voted best new play by Broadway World, Houston; and played most recently at the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival.  He has an MFA in playwriting from UCLA and is represented by the Robert A. Freedman Dramatic Agency. Aleksmeriloplaywright.com. **Roger Midgett** is a Clinical Social Worker who has lived with his family on Bainbridge Island for the past 25 years. He’s participated in Poetry Corners, Ars Poetica, and John Willson’s poetry workshops. He has published fiction and poetry under the pen name Sam Rogers and his books can be seen at samrogersbooks.com. **Audrey Auerbach Nelson** (she/her) (co-author with William Galvin) is a writer, a Bainbridge High School graduate, and a rising senior at Wesleyan University, where she studies anthropology. She is a reporting intern for the Kitsap Sun and a participant in the 2024 Vox Media Writers Workshop for aspiring journalists. In 2021, her short story "Complications" was honored by Wesleyan's prestigious Hamilton Prize; Lin-Manuel Miranda called the story "delightful and surprising at every turn." When not writing, Audrey enjoys playing contact sports, collecting dangly earrings, and ranting about the subversive qualities of romance novels. **Aviva Peltin** is delighted to have her work selected for Island Theatre’s Ten-Minute Play Festival. Her screenplays have been recognized in writing competitions, and in 2023, she signed her first shopping agreement with an established executive producer in LA. Aviva is also the co-host of “When Isabel Met Aviva,” a podcast about romcoms, female-driven screenwriting, and breaking into the entertainment industry. She’s also a fellow in the Northwest Screenwriters Guild. Aviva’s now developing a romcom based upon her experiences of moving to Bainbridge from Seattle and witnessing how islanders have mastered the art of leisure. **Jennifer Pippin-Montanez** has acted in Island Theater’s Ten-Minute Play Festival off and on for the past decade. “The Ride Home” is her second play produced for the Festival. She has appeared in community theaters across Kitsap County, including Bainbridge Performing Arts and Port Gamble Theater. She teaches English at North Kitsap High School. **Kendra Truett** has frivolously dabbled in theatre, music, art and writing much of her life, usually throwing the spaghetti to the wall to see what sticks. She was a teaching artist with La Jolla Playhouse, the Escondido Center for the Arts, and Arts for Learning in San Diego. With degrees from the Academy of Art University and San Diego State, she was a theatrical set designer, painter, and photographer for many years. She was a co-founder of the theatre group, the Poolhouse Project, and Crazy Mother Independent Film Productions, having written plays and very, very independent (okay, no-budget) screenplays. A beloved teacher at the University of Washington, Roethke’s students included prominent poets Richard Hugo, Tess Gallagher, David Wagoner, and Carolyn Kizer. “First Class” was written by U.W. Professor Emeritus and poet David Wagoner and stars Steve Stolee as Theodore Roethke. The one-act play is staged as if in Roethke’s UW classroom, with audience members sitting in as the popular teacher’s students. It is recommended for high school age and up. Performances take place at the Bainbridge Public Library on Saturday, September 28th at 7:00 pm and Sunday, September 29th at 3:00 pm. Admission is free. No reservations are necessary. “This is a poetry workshop, God help us,” begins “First Class.” In his introduction to the play, David Wagoner wrote: “Most of the teaching methods of artists in all categories have gone unrecorded. We know very little about what great painters and great composers, for instance, said to their pupils. In “First Class” I've tried to re-create the atmosphere of one of Roethke's poetry workshops, working mostly from my memories of him and a number of examples of the kinds of poems and opinions he admired, some of the near rituals he used both on students and himself, some of his unique spirit, and some of the hectic ways Time and Place would leap over each other for him as if he were in charge of both.” In the process, the audience is swept into not only the exhilarating milieu of Roethke’s classroom, but also the terrible landscape of the mental illness that clouded most of his life. **“Theodore Roethke and Bloedel Reserve: A Poet’s Place”** **Tickets: $14 for Bloedel Reserve members, $40 for non-members;** Island Theatre’s presentation of “First Class” is offered in conjunction with “Theodore Roethke and Bloedel Reserve: A Poet’s Place,” an afternoon of poetry in commemoration of renowned northwest poet Theodore Roethke and his connection to Bloedel Reserve. Theodore Roethke is recognized as one of the greatest American poets of the 20th century. That Roethke died while swimming in the pool (now the rock garden) at the Bloedel Reserve during a 1963 visit with Prentice and Virginia Bloedel is an important part of Pacific Northwest history; the site is visited by poets and writers from all over the world. Roethke, who won both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award, produced a body of work and a teaching legacy that continues to influence poets today. His students include David Wagoner, Richard Hugo, Carolyn Kizer, Jack Gilbert, Tess Gallagher, and other luminary poets. Tess Gallagher, possibly Roethke’s only still-living student, is a widely published and esteemed poet with numerous awards for her work, including fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and a Maxine Cushing Gray Foundation Award. Bainbridge Island poet Linda Bierds is a recently retired U.W. Creative Writing professor whose honors and awards include fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Guggenheim Foundation, the Ingram Merrill Foundation, the Poetry Society of America, and the MacArthur Foundation. She has received the PEN/West Poetry Prize, the Washington State Governor’s Writers Award, the Consuelo Ford Award from the Poetry Society of America, and four Pushcart Prizes. Pimone Triplett, a finalist in Narrative journal’s Fifteenth Annual Poetry Contest, is the author of four poetry collections and a professor of creative writing at the University of Washington’s MFA program. Bainbridge Island’s inaugural Poet Laureate Michele Bombardier is the winner of the 2024 New Ohio Review Prize. Her poetry collection, What We Do, was a finalist for the Washington Book Award. She holds an MFA in poetry from Pacific University and has received fellowships from Hedgebrook, Mineral School, and The Tyrone Guthrie Centre. “Theodore Roethke and Bloedel Reserve: A Poet’s Place” takes place at the Bloedel Reserve, 7571 NE Dolphin Dr, Bainbridge Island on Saturday, September 28th from 3:00-4:30 pm. This year’s ten plays were selected from over 65 submissions by Kitsap County playwrights and reflect a wide range of genres—from heartfelt drama to absurd comedy, from the real to the surreal. There’s truly something for everyone—and a brand new story every ten minutes. **Chris Albrecht** has mostly written about technology for the bulk of his career. He had a digital cartoon short produced by Nickelodeon in 2015, and two original feature film scripts optioned. This is his first play. He has lived on Bainbridge for more than a decade with his wife, Jen, son, Oscar, and dog, Boots. “Your Chances of Winning” marks James’ 5th play selected for the festival. He is grateful for the opportunity to have his work seen, and hopes you enjoy it.  James is currently at work on a trilogy of full length plays spanning three decades, all set in California motels.  A 25 year Bainbridge Island resident, James currently lives in Dublin, Ireland with his wife, Lori. James is a proud member of The Dramatists Guild of America.  James dedicates this work to his late, and beloved friend, Bob Tull.  **Jeffrey M. Brown** is a playwright, actor, and director**.** His work has been produced by Oregon Contemporary Theatre, Key City Public Theatre, Island Theatre, and Edmonds Driftwood Players, where his play *Another Fad* won the *Audience Choice* award. On stage, he has been seen at BPA, Island Theatre, The Jewel Box, Edmonds Driftwood Theatre, Port Gamble Theatre, and the Lesser- Known Players. Most recently, he directed *The Realistic Joneses* at The Jewel Box. This year’s theme reminds us of the immersive power of live theater to be a healthy “escape” into imagination and regeneration. Thanks to Island Theatre for once again offering this much needed “escape hatch” for performers and audiences alike. **Jason Erickson** is the playwright of *Barking Mad* in this year’s Ten-Minute Play Festival. He is a screenwriter, editor, actor, and director. His editing work includes Alan Rudolph’s *New York Times* Critics’ Pick *Ray Meets Helen*. He wrote and directed *Complications of a Walking Baby*, a winner at the Celluloid Bainbridge Film Festival, and wrote and starred in a segment of the feature film *Bench Stories*. Jason is the founder of MechBlocks and proud husband and father of three. Like her characters in “Hilltop,” **Nora Vitz Harrison** regularly hikes the trails of Bainbridge Island. A published short story writer, Nora now combines her acting experience with her writing skills. Her first play, developed during Island Theatre’s 2024 playwriting workshop, was a winner in an international 10-minute play festival in Oregon. “Hilltop” is her second play. Nora also will be playing the title role in “The Half Life of Marie Curie” at BPA, September 11-14. **Gina King** is a BHS grad and returned resident. She is a conservation biologist who dabbles in writing and art, and was thrilled to have her 2nd attempt at a 10-minute play (Advance Team: Zoo) selected for last year's festival. Now she is doubly excited to be included again with Lesser Known Snakes of the Bayou.  She swears she named Team Flamingo long before it became a hyper-local political statement, but has no regrets. **Aleks Merilo** is an award-winning playwright. His script, “The Snowmaker” was winner of the Playwrights First Award, The Chameleon Theatre Circle New Play contest, Playhouse on The Square’s New Works @ The Works Festival, and was a finalist for the Oregon Play Prize. His play “The Widow of Tom’s Hill” played Off-Broadway at 59E59, where Broadway World called it “A truly distinctive piece of theater.” His play “Exit 27” was called “The best original play to be produced this season” by the Houston Chronicle; was voted best new play by Broadway World, Houston; and played most recently at the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival. He has an MFA in playwriting from UCLA and is represented by the Robert A. Freedman Dramatic Agency. **Jennifer Pippin-Montanez** has acted and directed for Island Theater’s Ten-Minute Play Festival off and on for the past decade. “Time for a Chat” is her second play produced for the festival. She has appeared in community theaters across Kitsap County, including Bainbridge Performing Arts, Island Theatre and Port Gamble Theater. She teaches English at North Kitsap High School, where she finds limitless material for her characters. **KAREN POLINSKY** is a former Bainbridge Island high school teacher, and currently a freelance writer living in Portland, Oregon. In April her biography of Ian Mackay debuted. Mackay is a quadriplegic, consultant for Apple, world record breaking athlete, and advocate for accessible trails. Her first book *Dungeness,* like *Ian’s Ride,* is set on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington. She’s written more than a dozen staged plays, including her recent comedy *Regret,* performed with live music and puppets in Portland's Fertile Ground Festival. She enjoys camping and biking and hiking with her husband Michael and her border collie Pearl. **Doug O’Connor** is a long-time Bainbridge resident and still believes it’s the best place in the known universe to live. His play “Buffaloed”, derived from his short story by the same name, is his first work to go public and he’s thrilled that the presentation is on “The Island”. After retirement from corporate work he began his fiction writing journey by earning his certificate in fiction writing at the University of Washington. He is a member of Pacific Northwest Writers and is an aficionado of short courses on the craft of writing. What could go wrong? “The Thanksgiving Play” is directed by Fred Saas and features Kylie Cordero, Todd Erler, Kate Henderson, Jackie O’Brien, and Steve Stolee. Performances take place at the Bainbridge Public Library on Saturday, October 25 at 7:00 pm and Sunday, October 26 at 3:00 pm. No reservations are necessary. The play is recommended for high school age and up. Donations are deeply appreciated as they enable us to stage these productions. In “The Thanksgiving Play” by MacArthur Genius Larissa FastHorse (Sicangu Lakota), four earnest white progressives have assigned themselves an impossible task: creating a play for children that accurately and respectfully celebrates Native American Heritage Month and "breaks down the myths and stereotypes of Thanksgiving" – all in 45 minutes. The yoga-practicing, privilege-checking, farmers-market-shopping characters know that performing Native characters in redface is wrong, that the Thanksgiving narrative is “problematic,” and that the history of the United States is one of oppression and subjugation, but they're blind to the arrogance of their enterprise. As it skewers white, well-meaning liberals for being so focused on not giving offense that they can't do anything meaningful at all, “The Thanksgiving Play” becomes bitingly funny and closer to the truth than we like to admit. FastHorse wrote the play in response to the notion that her works couldn't be produced because of a perceived difficulty in finding Native American actors. To circumvent this limitation, she created a play that tackles Native American issues without relying on Native American actors. She offers this to her white audiences: “(this play) was created with you in mind. I hope you have a great night at the theatre but also, perhaps, learn something. I want you to leave with more questions than you knew you had to ask.” “The Thanksgiving Play” premiered on Broadway in 2023. *“The familiar, whitewashed story of Pilgrims and Native Americans chowing down together gets a delicious roasting from expert farceurs.”* – The New York Times *“Very, very funny. Over three days – and four performances – we present a juried selection of plays by Kitsap County playwrights, directed and performed by Kitsap locals. The plays, which have been selected from approximately 65 entries, are fully staged and performed in the beautiful Buxton Center at Bainbridge Performing Arts.  Prior to Festival performances, we host **MEET THE PLAYWRIGHTS**, a lively panel discussion and Q&A with the playwrights behind each year’s winning plays. This is the audience’s chance to talk with the playwrights about their plays, playwriting process, and theatre in general. Each fall we offer the **TEN-MINUTE PLAYWRITING WORKSHOP**, a small-group, multi-session workshop led by a professional playwright and teacher that guides students through crafting a ten-minute play. Want to **SUBMIT A PLAY**for the Festival? Anyone with a strong connection to Kitsap County (because they live or work here) is welcome to submit a play. Our deadline is February 14th each year. *For more information about the Festival, the playwriting workshop, or about submitting a play, sign up for our mailing list below.* **Join our mailing list to learn about our next Island Theatre at the Library performance!** Island Theatre is now accepting submissions of ten-minute plays for our 2026 Ten-Minute Play Festival! Submission deadline is February 14, 2026. There is no theme for plays this year. The only requirement is that plays’ performance time be ten minutes or less. The competition is open to all Kitsap County playwrights – experienced and aspiring – high school age and above. To be a “Kitsap County playwright” means you currently live or work in Kitsap County, or you lived or worked here for a substantial period in the past. Ten plays will be chosen from all the submissions by a panel of theatre professionals and the Island Theatre board of directors, and announced in April. Rachel scrambles out the window into the snowy night, beginning a surreal adventure where nothing is as it seems. The production is intended for mature audiences. It deals with challenging themes of mental health, gun violence, and alcohol abuse. Discretion is advised.
